  • All 12 girls of Bilpudi Girls' Hostel have passed in 12th grade.
  • All 7 boys running a self - help mini hostel in Kaprada - a far away town - have also passed, in12th grade
More About 7 Bold Students

These 7 boys completed their high - School education in Tamachhadi High School. They were keen to continue their study for Gymnasium. We desperately tried; but could not start Boys' Hostel after even a year [like Girls' Hostel] for them, in Bilpudi or around. They managed to get admission in a distant  High School in Kaprada village [now emerging town]. Then they approached us to make some simple arrangement for their lodging & boarding. That was gladly done by VPSS. They managed every thing on their own - without any cook, servant or supervisor - for two years [11th & 12th]. Of course, we asked our coordinator of that block, to visit the young boys occasionally & help them, if they have some problems. The parents are illiterate and poor. We cannot expect any guidance and material support from them. One of the boys [out of 7] is selected for intensive study of English, by some Christian Missionary NGO in Kaprada. They have made arrangements for the study in Pune  [Maharashtra] for that boy. Stimulating indeed.

Follow - Up

Immediately after the results were declared, all the students assembled in Bilpudi Hostel. They were given guidance [the process and the arrangements are on] for their further studies in several High Schools, including one exclusive Science Gymnasium.

For those who finished Gymnasium, Vocational Courses like Nursing - Rural Engineering - Pharmacy [for one ex - student who took science subjects] and for Social Sciences [Degree Course] and Rural University Courses like Gandhi Vidyapith in Vedchhi. The picture is emerging. The financial arrangements have been worked out, with generous support already received & offered for all. it is not a problem, thanks to our loving donors. Really encouraging.

 UNIQUE & PRODUCTIVE MASS MARRIAGES

VPSS organized fourth Mass Marriages [M.M.] lMay 2010
It was a unique event, as it also resulted in ‘Cluster  Plan’ – a platform for development.

62 couples celebrated their marriages. Except 2 poor couples, every couple contributed R 1,000 as was a rule framed by the community.
The poorest man [50?] had a broken leg. He survives by begging in near - by cities. Being native of the area, he came to know of the program and approached our coordinator. That man was already living in the village, with one mentally retarded lady. They had two kids. There were many aged pairs in M. M., having children. This is not uncommon in tribal society.  The couple was the happiest [out of 62], having an opportunity to get married after a long wait at their door - steps, without expenses.

8,000 persons enjoyed the mass meal and more than 10,000 joined folk dances. The event took place in a very remote forest village. 7 villages [Po : 5,000] making a cluster were covered. No development worth the name has taken place in this isolated corner. That made the event all the more attractive, exciting and a great success.

The couples got full dresses, simple ornament, and vessels of daily needs  All the couples will get 10 mango plants each in monsoon - a gift from VPSS [part of the mango plantation project supported by TUFF].

Main support of RS 1,00.000 came from a well - wisher [who wants to remain unnamed]. He was unhappy last year, as he was late to know of M. M. from a website.

He sent support, in advance. The rest [most of the gifts] of the expense was from Friends of Bombay.
M. M. became productive also this time. As a follow up of our short speeches [Theme: Let us remove poverty, come what may] and the gala event, the community was over -  enthused. The local leaders of 7 villages held a meeting there and then only, to work out a Plan. A young leader from the cluster came to see us in Bilpudi the very next day with a proposal of 10 check - dams, soil - bunding program and a new well etc. We discussed how to execute all these programs. The programs got initiated the very third day, to finish before it starts raining. The expenses for a well will be met from the contribution coming from Kumla teachers.  VPSS has received a large donation from one Bombay organization, to be used after monsoon. So the program will start ahead of schedule. Credit goes to M. M. Then they will follow Model Village Plan [on lines of one village on way] with programs like Mother - Child Care, Second [Winter] Crop, Mango Plantation, Male Buffalo, Vocational Training etc. Thus, M. M. program is leading to a 'Cluster Development Plan' - in an untouched corner.
